The new Ampera from Vauxhall brings clean, eco-motoring to the road. Free of the usual restrictions of batteries, it offers lively electric performance and a massive range of up to 360 miles.
The Ampera is an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-Rev) powered by technology called Voltec. It’s different than other advanced propulsion systems – it uses electricity to drive the car’s wheels at all times and speeds. And since the average UK driver drives 25 miles or less a day, the Ampera has been designed to travel up to 50 miles on battery power alone. If the battery's energy runs out, a petrol-fuelled 1.4 ECOTEC® engine-generator kicks in and extends the range by a further 310 miles. This effectively eliminates ‘range anxiety’, a problem associated with other electric cars.
The Ampera comes with everything you need for charging at home, at the office or out and about. The state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery can be recharged from a standard 240 V / 10A power socket. To fully charge the Ampera costs on average £1, so assuming an average range of 40 miles per charge and 8,000 miles per year purely on electric power the charges needed by the Ampera would cost approximately £216 per year in electricity – about the same as running your freezer and refrigerator.
Available in three trim levels, the Vauxhall Ampera starts at just £29,995 (inclusive of the £5,000 government plug-in car grant) for the Earth model. The Ampera Earth comes with a raft of standard features such as DAB radio, Bluetooth, 7-inch touch-screen control monitor, climate control, cruise control and alloy wheels.

Adding a standard leather interior with heated front seats and front/rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera, the Positiv model sits in the middle of the Ampera range at £32,250 (inclusive of the £5,000 government plug-in car grant). But topping the line-up is the Electron, which comes as standard with a state-of-the-art infotainment unit comprising:
